RHODE ISLAND RED

Rhode Island Red formed in London in 2009 and their line-up consists of vocalist Lyla D’Souza, guitarists Dave Garfield and Andrea Basiola, bassist Mike McGuiness and drummer Rha Stranges. According to the press release, members of the band have played alongside such diverse talents as Joe Cocker and Rammstein. This 3 track EP kicks off with the title track. The intro is reminiscent of Soundgarden’s ‘Spoonman’, at least to my ears, and the song, as a whole, is up tempo and well performed with the vocals of D’Souza being a particular high point. The second track is entitled ‘Beige’ which is a complete misnomer. Beige is normally associated with blandness but this track is full of vitality and life with another strong vocal performance. The last track, ‘Stalemate’, is a slightly slower effort, an acoustic intro growing into a ‘power ballad’ style cut with backing vocals in the vein of All About Eve. This song, in particular, showcases the strong vocals of D’Souza. Rhode Island Red have energy as well as the ability to deliver high quality rock. It would be interesting to see if their recorded performances are matched by their live show. If you get the chance, check them out!
