FUCKHAMMER
Fuckhammer. ‘Hammered to Fuck’. Says it all, doesn’t it? Or at least it should. With such appalling appellations (and distressing artwork), one could be forgiven for expecting many an apt adjective, simile or metaphor willing to be manhandled, molested, and manipulated into a piece of writing that is (or at least hopefully) equally gut-wrenching to promptly proffer itself. ‘Tis not to be, sadly. The opening to ‘Born of the Ass’ promises much, but when Baggy and the band kick in for the rest of the track – and indeed the other tracks – what follows doesn’t fulfil that grim potential. The sludge and death metal make for an interesting combination, albeit theoretically. Of the four tracks, ‘Hillbillies’ is the best of the diminutive batch with a pretty good sludge groove to it as well as a bunch of riffs and a pace that makes it stand out as, well, an oddity. Were it not for Baggy’s bark, this could easily be a different band. Stick a different vocal on it, maybe more toward the doom end of the spectrum, and this would be much better. ‘Abortion Addict’ returns the band to the same mould as the first two tracks and so makes no great impact. ‘Hammered To Fuck’ has its moments but they’re few and far between. Clearly adept musicians, Fuckhammer are yet to hit their stride.
